Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover

Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover!

Sponsored by Stearns & Foster

Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover

Recently I’ve been sharing some of the design “shuffling” that has been going on around our house! Last week I promised to come back to share the “after” of the summer refresh in our guest room. So, voila! I’m back with this coastal cottage bedroom makeover!

Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover!

I’m totally in love with the new look. I really didn’t even change a lot, but oh my goodness, I’m always thrilled when a few changes are all you need to feel like you are in a brand new space.

Guest Bedroom Design Details

In this room we focused on finishing up key elements that brought comfort, texture and personality, like a new mattress, adding fun striped curtain panels with pom pom detail and a beautiful new wood beaded chandelier.

I love decorating over time (and being patient with the process) because it eventually allows me to begin to add in pieces I really love.

We weren’t able to get a statement light fixture earlier on, but I knew it was going to be worth waiting for. Some of the fixtures I really wanted were totally out of my budget, so I was willing to be patient for something special that would still be in my price range. Light fixtures can make such a difference, so they are worth careful consideration.

Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover!

We actually needed a light fixture that was a smaller scale than many of the options out there because, well, it’s a TINY ROOM. I am a big fan of shopping in the kids or teen section of designer furniture stores like Pottery Barn. They often have similar styles and quality to their main fixtures, but they usually offer more affordable pieces and often smaller scaled items for shorter ceiling heights and smaller spaces. (All my sources will be linked at the end of the post).

I feel like I love this room even more because I had to wait for several of the key elements to come together. When you have to wait, you appreciate each detail even more.

A Quality Mattress

The most luxurious thing in this room is our new Stearns & Foster mattress. As I mentioned in my “before” post, my husband and I had a Stearns & Foster mattress for over 15 years. We moved it to five different master bedrooms in that period of time, so clearly we didn’t want to part with that mattress.

Great sleep is an essential part of well-being, so comfort should be a part of a well-designed bedroom. While I love new curtains and light fixtures, sleeping has always been my favorite. I’m happy to finally welcome a brand new Stearns & Foster back into our home (and eventually into our master bedroom, sorry guests!). This beauty changes everything!

Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover!

It’s hard to even convey how comfortable it is. It’s not like any of the mattresses that are delivered to your door in a box. It isn’t lightweight or flimsy at all. It’s dreamy to sleep on, but so solid and well-built. When you lay on it, you feel like you are being hugged by a cloud, ha! In my opinion it has just the right amount of support to plush ratio :).

Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover!

Just like putting together a lovely room, this mattress is crafted with such amazing detail. I love that it is a feast for the eye, too! Look at all the gorgeous quilting, tufting and the trim work! I almost hated to cover it up with bedding; it’s such a beautiful mattress. It even has convenient leather straps. No detail was overlooked for style or comfort.

Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover!

Everyone in our family agrees; this is the best spot in the house.

We’re all ready for summer vacation in here! The only thing I should caution you about if you are considering putting a Stearns & Foster mattress in a guest room is that no one will want to leave.

Outdoor Fire Pit Seating Ideas That Blend Looks And Function In Crazy Ways

Having a fire pit out in the backyard is simply genius. It gives you the perfect entertainment setting for outdoor. The fire pit is an excellent focal point around which you can have comfortable chairs, benches or sofas. The combo makes for an extraordinary conversation area and ll you need to do to ensure that is find some suitable fire pit seating options to choose from. Maybe we can help with that.

Set in the heart of Arizona, the Brown Residence is surrounded by a desert landscape and not much else.Lake|Flato Architects made sure to integrate it nicely in its surroundings. giving it glazed facades and vast and open outdoor spaces, including a lounge area organized around a fire pit.

Dimit Architects designed this residence for a young family that wanted to be able to entertain guests both indoors and outdoors. The architects gave them this fire pit seating area with built-in benches that form a U shape. It’s a sunken seating area and it looks very cozy and comfortable.

The biggest challenge faced by Carney Logan Burke Architects when designing this residence was finding a way to make it blend in and to ensure a seamless connection with the existing community while at the same time offering their clients the modern home setting they desired. The project, as a result, is a hybrid and you can see that in every space and detail, including this fire pit seating area.

Triad Colors in Contemporary Interior Design

There are a variety of formal relationships between and among colors. One of the lesser known groupings is triad colors. Triad colors are three colors that are evenly spaced around the traditional color wheel. This is also referred to as a triadic color scheme.

Because triad colors are evenly spaced (three color spacings apart) , there are four triad color combinations on the traditional color wheel. We’ll look at all four of them in this article.

Triad Color Scheme 1: Red, Yellow,&Blue

The most common triad from the color wheel is also the trio that comprises the primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. These colors are paired in a variety of ways and in a variety of spaces, from juvenile bedrooms to sophisticated sitting rooms.

While this photo shows the yellow to be more of a yellow-orange, you still get the impression of red-yellow-blue when looking at the seating. The effect is vibrant and energetic yet is beneficially tempered by a charcoal grey chair.

When using triad colors, it’s important to remember balance. Not only do you want to balance the use of the triad colors themselves (we’ll get into that a little later), but you also want to balance other neutrals with the color scheme so it doesn’t overwhelm. Neutrals such as white, grey, tan, and black all work well as companions to triad colors in interior design.

Triad Color Scheme 2: Red-Orange, Yellow-Green, & Blue-Violet

Due to their relationship on the color wheel, triad colors combine to become a vibrant palette. Even when muted, pale, and/or largely unsaturated versions of the colors are used, the combination stands out.

It’s recommended that you consider the inherent vibrancy of the trio before you begin your decorating. You won’t want your color palette to feel garish or overstimulating. Determine which neutrals will settle the triad colors and help them to shine without becoming overwhelming.

Triad Color Scheme 3: Orange, Green, & Violet

Artwork provides a perfect medium for incorporating triad colors into interior design. Plus, it will help to keep you from painting an entire room orange while dragging in a purple couch and green side chairs. Artwork can provide subtle gradation, which softens the obvious visual effect of triad colors while still facilitating their impact.

In fact, it’s important to remember that subtle introductions of color can complete the triadic color palette – a palette doesn’t necessarily exclude all hints of all other colors. In printed fabrics, for example, as color fades from dark to light or warm to cold, you’re likely to find one or more of your triad colors in the gradation. While less noticeable, when these colors combine with their triad partners, the visual impact is still powerful.

In this example, the triad colors (orange, green, and violet) are obvious for two of the colors, but the violet can be overlooked because it feels like part of the background. This is an effective and sophisticated way to implement triad colors and deepen their aesthetic.

Basic Bathroom Gets a Graphic, Modern Renovation

When I think back to how many places I’ve called home throughout my life, I realize just how many boring, basic bathrooms I’ve lived with and the answer is “too many.” I mean, they’re fine in that they were functional, but for a design-obsessed person like myself, they were enough to make me cringe on a regular basis.

When we chose to partner with TOTO earlier this year, we decided that the gorgeous TOTO fixtures were way too amazing to live in my basic bathroom (see before photos at the end!). That led to the decision to try to elevate the rest of the space to do those fixtures some justice. As we mentioned before, we brought in designer Joyce Elizabeth Tranchida, of online interior design platform Decorilla, who graciously helped me hone in on what I liked and wanted after I obsessively pinned for a few weeks. After some back and forth with Joyce, here’s the mood board I finally decided on:

Decorilla magically turned the mood board into 3D renderings that looked so incredibly real that I wanted to fast forward to the finished product. However, unlike on television, renovations take time which I quickly learned!

3D rendering by Decorilla

As you’ve probably heard from anyone who’s ever done any kind of renovation, issues come up that delay the project and that’s what happened here, but more on that later! It’s time for the final reveal because it’s finally DONE!

Once the TOTO products were selected, the rest of the design all started with that incredible tile from TileBar that I completely fell in love with. For the floor, we went with elongated hex tiles in a matte black and for the shower and main wall, the hex penny tiles in matte white with black grout. I can be slightly afraid of color, especially for something that’s permanent, so black and white was the perfect way to start the space. I highly suggest hiring a professional tile person and not just any contractor, especially if you’re planning to do any kind of small tile like penny or mosaic. Penny tile is much harder to install and can easily be done incorrectly… and unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened the first go-round. After learning my lesson, I brought in an expert to finish the job and it was definitely the right decision!

Gorgeous Loft With Beautiful Textures And In Warm Shades

This loft has many eye catchy details, gorgeous and inviting decor and a cool use of wood, leather, stone and other natural materials

This loft has many eye-catchy details, gorgeous and inviting decor and a cool use of wood, leather, stone and other natural materials

This loft by Huniford Design Studio is a unique place, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the photos, I promise! A weathered wood delight with the most beautiful art gallery wall in the living room, with a sexy staircase, even sexier bathtub and a sweet rooftop patio….I’m seriously dying over this loft! Ready to see all the spaces? Let’s do that!

The living room is decorated so that looking at it longer and longer you see more and more details. There’s a weathered wood wall and refined navy and blue velvet furniture, which beautifully contrasts the wood and leather. A raw edge coffee table and a large leather pillow look chic and add texture to the décor. The lighting fixtures and a horse artwork make the space more personalized and unique.

The entryway shows off a cool staircase with weathered wood steps and a dark metal base. A rough wood bench and antler candle holders with a faux animal skin rug look very cozy and chic.

The kitchen, which is united with the living room, features weathered wood cabinets, black metal open shelves and cool faceted lamps over it. Rough wood stools add a warm touch to the kitchen and echo with the coffee table behind.

The bathroom is decorated with warm-colored wood, tiles and stone. Weathered wood panels and furniture make the space warm and inviting, and a wooden bathtub is a very trendy idea. Rough stone sinks and metal fixtures add texture to the bathroom.

Look at other chic spaces of this loft and get impressed!

A Super Space Saving Solution for Small Apartments

While many people might dream of making their home in an expansive mansion or countryside estate, that’s simply not the reality for most people, particularly those that choose to live in cities. Urban life comes with many advantages — cultural, culinary, creative — but it often does not come with a lot of space. Instead of succumbing to a lifestyle that is cramped and uncomfortable, Ori Systems has come up with a much better idea. With their creative bed console, a small space can be simultaneously a bedroom, living room, work area, and closet.

With just a push of a button, the bed slides away, leaving room for other activities. The result is an apartment that is more functional and beautiful than any combination of furnishings could be.

Space Saving Solution

When fully extended, a full or queen bed leaves plenty of space for sleeping.

To entertain, the bed can slide closed, opening up space on the other side of the room.

Space Saving Solution

Surrounding the bed is tons of shelving, including a full entertainment unit and even hooks for coats and bags.

It’s important that a comfortable home have plenty of floor space and this solution allows for that, even in a studio.

Even without putting the bed away, the unit makes a cozy area to relax on the opposite side.

Check out this great video that shows how it all works:

Favorite 2x4 Outdoor Project Plans

Hey build friends!  This morning swans flew over our front porch!  Migrating birds are the first sign of spring, and we are excited to start spending more time outdoors (without a million layers of down coats on).

I’ve got lots of projects I hope to tackle this year for our new house, but wanted to take a minute to share some of my all time favorite outdoor seating projects.  Here they are, in no particular order …

1. 2×4 Adirondack Chair

This 2×4 Adirondack Chair is my favorite of all the adirondack chairs, for quite a few reasons.  I love that it is simple, econmical and easy to build.  I love how sturdy it is.  And I love that the legs and frame are 2x4s – this chair will hold up longer than a chair made with 1xs.  I’ll be building a few this summer, and expect me to beef up the arms a little more, and I’m loving penetrating stains for outdoor finishes. You can find the plans for this outdoor adirondack chair here.

2. Outdoor Sectional

This outdoor sectional, built by East Coast Creative, is so functional and versatile!  I love how she used 2x4s for the entire project to really beef it up.  Head on over to East Coast Creative for the Build Post.

3. Firepit Benches

These firepit benches serve as seating on the front, a tabletop on top, and extra storage (for ‘smores and beverages and extra chips of course!) underneath.  They are quick and easy to build and very sturdy and comfortable.  Love how they turned out!  Grab the free plans here.

4. Front Porch Bench

I built this bench for our lake cabin.  It is a very simple design, but the X back adds enough interest to make it front porch worthy.  It is very sturdy, and has a nice deep seat, with plenty of room for a cusion or pillows.  Grab the free plans for this outdoor bench here.
